South-American governments in alert after US Fourth Fleet reactivation
South-American nations are in alert after the reactivation of the American Fourth Fleet after 58 years. Brazilian, Bolivian, Venezuelan and Peruvian governments were tense after knowing about the AFF action, which was part of the attack to some cargo ship back in the 40′s – one of these sunk ships had paper for the Assis Chateaubriand’s tabloids – when Getulio Vargas was forced to join the Alliance in the II World War. The same fleet helped the imposition of a military dictatorship back in 1964.
The Brazilian President Luis Inácio ‘Lula’ da Silva said, last Thursday (September 18), in his public speech for the baptism of the new P-53 oil platform in Rio Grande (RS) that the Brazilian Navy has a fundamental job protecting the ‘presalt’ oil . Clarín, Reuters and the Brazilian Globo news agencies informed that AFF was positioned at the coastal area of Santos city. The Latin American nations see this action as a affront to their sovereignty. The not big surprise about the AFF reactivation occurred almost a year after Brazil discovered the 2nd biggest oil reserve in the last 20 years. Last week Brazil deployed warships and sent military troops to the southern part of the nation to show that it can protect its oil-rich waters . There is also negotiations with France to built a nuclear submarines to patrol these areas.
