Recession? Lack of will? Still feeling the chills of winter? Well, at least now you can be politically correct while drowns the sorrows, or celebrate a good time to give a shot to the saint, not forgetting the spring knocking on the door.
It’s time for barbecued, meeting with friends, music, outdoor Brazilian caipirinhas and famous, now will not be made with Pitu! Finally! Finally a good rum to drink or to make caipirinhas, Sagatiba, Leblon, and especially organic, Porto Morretes. Yeah, the LCBO is now selling rum of good quality. I am a fan of white and yellow cachaça, I confess, I tried the organic kind at Caju Restaurant, from entrepreneur Mário Cassini, in Toronto. It’s delicious. I always loved the nectar of the cane, Centenária Januária, Boazinha, Ipioca and many others. When in Brazil on holidays or on business, I really enjoy a dose of the yellow drink, ‘pure’. I take a bottle of Jack Daniels when travelling to Brazil and an old friend always takes a bottle of good cachaça, result … A good long talk ‘watered’ to 40 GL of inestimable sweetness.
The interesting of all is the ‘entry’ of three cachaças in Canada at the same time. Sagatiba I had tried (at my partner’s bar Felipe), Leblon I didn’t tried yet, and Porto Morretes (the region of Curitiba). I was impressed with the taste of the latter, which is on sale at the LCBO, like the other two, but it is not in the same section of the first two cachaças, it is in a ‘private’ one, I am not kidding.
When I was looking for it at one of the LCBO stores I questioned where the newly arrived Morretes was, cuz I had already savored during tasting at Caju Restaurant in the presence of Fulgêncio Torres (owner of the Porto Morretes), and its representative in Canada, Ildefonso Go.
During my first search I did not find it, one of the attendants of that store led me to this noble area of the store, the same attendant was impressed because this was an organic drink and he had heard that you could make a drink similar to the morrito with it and also it was a politically correct spirit! Either way, I bought a bottle, $ 33.85 dollars.
A detail about Morretes; it is done with the heart of the cachaça, not the head (poor taste) or syrup (taste bitter, sour), but the middle. Now when the sun comes out we will have picanha cut (Brazilian special meat cut), arugula, and finally good cachaça – for the lovers of white or yellow sugar cane alcoholic nectar, the politically correct and also the Holy.

From March 24 to 28, 8PM, at Fleck Dance Theatre (formerly Premiere Dance Theatre) Brazilian dance Grupo Corpo will be performing.
“Toronto’s favourite dance troupe returns with the Canadian Premiere of Breu and their signature partnership with Philip Glass, Seven or Eight Pieces for a Ballet. Known for its sexy physicality and dramatic visual flair, Grupo Corpo creates a vibrant blend of balletic grace and modern dance.
Breu features a dark score by multiple Latin Grammy-winner Lenine and showcases some of the troupe’s most aggressive and confrontational choreography to date, infused with the polyrhythms of Latin and African dance.
Don’t miss this incredible chance to see why Grupo Corpo is considered one of (if not the) best dance companies in the world.

Bom apetite! Sandro Miranda/PanTV

On Friday night, Marie, my son André ( a hockey fan with 2.5 years old) and I went to Ricoh Coliseum to watch the Marlies. We had fun without paying 100 dollars to watch a good hockey game. I wouldn’t watch the Maple Leafs because they will probably loose all the games to be able to choose the best players available next year, I was told. Like the Leafs, the Marlies follow their stronger brother; they lost from the 2nd and 3rd period to the Hamilton Bulldogs. But André didn’t care, he was happy as fish in water, as a Maple Leafs fan: No complaints. We went to a French party after and we had some more fun and wine. Saturday was winter barbecue party at home!
The bbcue went ’til 2AM, my friend Tony, invite to go with him to do some ice fishing… Oh yes, he ask if I would like to go with him, his son, his son friend and a young Brazilian student at 7AM, and I indeed agree with him. It was an amazing Canadian thing. We went to Lake Simcoe, we got the fishing licence and fishing rods. have you fished on a top of aquarium? That’s how I can describe what’s like to fish in a frozen lake from the inside of a cabin. I could see the fish (perch) coming and biting your bait/hook.
For five hours we sat in the cabin with propane burner keeping us warm enough. At the end we has 21 perches, four of which I fried as soon as I got home… A delicious fresh fish to keep up with the depression that was pushing all of us to the edge.
I thought about the snow before throwing a barbecue at home last weekend, and I was expecting the 10cm falling during the little get together. Crazy? Barbecue outside in the middle of the winter? After three months of enough psycho-hibernation, it’s time to face the fact we’re eclectic and therefore we must enjoy our remaining winter, eh!
Louco? Churrasco fora no meio do inverno?
I had hot days in Brazil with some rain while I was there. On the other hand I saw much snow fell this year in Canada, and some very cold days (-20C) in Toronto, and in one of these worst days there was a blackout in the city, in a particular area where a large number of Brazilian and Portuguese, for 24 hours. So it was not bad, right? For those who are new to Toronto, this is not something common.
I went to Brazil to record some Panzines there. I did some really good interviews and left the way I expected. Either way I’m happy as a result of this trip – even though I have not ‘fallen’ into any of the beaches that I planned travel to. Now I’m back and I’ll have my first show of 2009 soon, we are making some changes on our website. And the game resumes …
Back to business
