The largest documentary festival in North America, the Hot Docs, based in Toronto, presents Brazilians documentaries on its 17th edition.

B1, Citizen Boilesen, Beyond Ipanema, Secrets of the tribe and Geral, were th e selected projects, but there is also Waste land, an international production

7News interviewed some of them on this special edition.

The first interviewee is Chaim Litewski, director/producer of Citizen Biolesen, a film about the life of Henning Albert Boilesen, using his life in Brazil as the field to discuss the years of dictatorship. Boilesen was involved with repression apparatus forces, like many entrepreneurs who supported financially the Oban (Operaçnão bandeirante) the right wing repression arm, which tortured and killed many ‘leftists’ in Brazil between 1964-1984.

Consumer Protection | Procon, the Brazilian example, on Panzine 14 - PanTVProcon, the consumer protection agency, was created more than 30 years ago in Brazil. There are 240 offices in São Paulo state, and the oldest ones are located in Campinas and São Paulo city. In 2008 Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula ad Silva signed a decree nº 6.253/08 after the elaboration of the Consumer Service Regulation document, created following public consultation intended to improve the quality of consumer service of the financial institutions, telephone operating companies, and airlines, the complain champions.

Recorded on New Year’s Eve at Riviera de São Lourenço, Brazil, the show highlights the unique characteristics of Brazilian New Year parties including traditional dinner, clothing and superstitions. We visited a dinner organized for residents of a building by the beach and asked them about some of their promises and wishes for this new year while showcasing the strong symbolism of elements present in virtually all Brazilian New Year’s Eve cememonies and parties. We talked about colours of clothes, food like pomegranate, grapes and lentils, the tradition of the sea and jumping over 7 waves, as well as offering flowers to Yemanja.

On the streets of Toronto, Reality Santa delivers Christmas presents related to some of the highlights of 2009 in Canada and Brazil. The facts that inspired the presents are global warming, floods in Brazil, HST and the economy in Canada, scandals in the Brazilian congress, the Toronto garbage strike, the November Brazilian blackout, the Toronto Maple Leafs and traffic jams of Brazil. By delivering those presents, Reality Santa tried to make up for the problems of 2009 and make everyone’s Christmas a little better.

A study done by Ryerson researchers on recent Latin-American immigrants in Toronto  is alarming; 56% of this population lacks food for their basic needs causing stress and bad nutrition.
The Brazilian gold olympic medalist swimmer César Cielo came to Canada and carried the Olympic Flame through New Brunswick’s Bay of Fundy, home of the biggest tide on the world.
MPB singer Gal Costa sang at Massey Hall, she gave an interview and spoke about Tropicalia, her love for music, and Bossa Nova.
